Every 6 seconds someone, somewhere in the world is suddenly and tragically killed because of injury. That’s 4.8 million lives per year! 1.35 million of these are from road traffic injury (1 every 26 seconds). We cannot, we should not, accept this needless suffering and loss in our communities.
Conference Statement
Every 6 seconds someone, somewhere in the world is suddenly and tragically killed because of injury. That’s 4.8 million lives per year! 1.35 million of these are from road traffic injury (1 every 26 seconds). We cannot, we should not, accept this needless suffering and loss in our communities.
The good news is, there is much that can be and has been done. Injury is predictable, which means it is preventable. Local communities can take control of their own destinies and reduce the burden caused by injury and crime and increase their safety, wellbeing and productivity.
This has not been an easy task; Effective action requires committed community, national and international networks. Networks that identify, mobilize and coordinate resources.
We have made a great start. Since the international safe community movement started nearly 30 years ago, we have joined in our vision to make the world a safer place to live, work and play … one community at a time.
At the end of this 3-day event, we are delighted that we had provided a safe space to share our thoughts, visions and experiences. As the final words we would like to send out our message, with a strong faith that it will guide for a safer community.
- The activities over the decade of action has produced a lot of valuable experiences that can and must be used to enhanced the road traffic safety for the time period beyond the decade of action.
- One of the major lessens that have been learned during the course of the decade of action is that traffic safety as a system must be managed based on the evaluated data. The advancements in the field of data gathering and management must continue to provide the solid bases for road traffic safety enhancements.
- Traffic safety is a dynamic system and evolves over time. In Iran, following the significant progress in enhancement of road traffic safety, the changes in the system suggest a revision in the national plans for road traffic safety, specifically in the area of road safety management.
- Decade of action is almost over, however there are many unresolved issues. Research has been the core of road traffic safety enhancement and the activities in this area must continue to bring new horizons to the field.
